El primer día

Primero que todo tengo que decir que el entrenamiento ha ido muy bien. Estoy bien enfocado y listo para el 4 de noviembre.
El viernes pasado fui al gimnasio como siempre lo hago. Me siento muy bien en la mañana y me encanta ir al gimnasio cuando no hay nadie allí.
Después de mi sesión de la mañana, me tomo un pequeño descanso y regreso al gimnasio alrededor de las 11:30. En ese momento, traigo a mis dos hijos Carlos Jr. (15 años) y Nacho (3 años). Hubo un tiempo en el que esta entrenando ‘sparring’ y Nacho se acercó mucho a la acción y casi se lleva un golpe. Después, estaba acostado boca arriba estirándome y Nacho vino a pegarme en la cabeza. Creo que es bueno decir que Nacho no vendrá a más sesiones de entrenamientos.
Pero la razón por la cual él estaba aquí es que le teníamos algo especial preparado para después: Fuimos al Camp Pendleton a ver algunas peleas de mi compañía promocional, ‘Sycuan Ringside Promotions’. ¡Estuvimos en una base militar! Me emocionaba hacer algo así porque supe que la compañía había hecho una cartelera gratis el año pasado y cuando escuché que lo harían de nuevo, me alegró mucho poder asistir esta vez.
Sycuan nos envió una enorme limosina, una Excursión. Mi esposa Graciella, mi hija Lourdes, Carlos Jr., Nacho y nuestro amigo Louis nos disfrutamos el viaje. Había un reportero de ‘Sports Illustrated’ junto con su traductor. La limosina era tan enorme que Carlos Jr. y Nacho pudieron jugar con una pelota de playa durante la mayor parte del rato que el reportero conversaba conmigo y Graciella.
Hablamos acerca de mi vida y mi carrera en el boxeo durante todo el viaje a Camp Pendleton. Graciella ayudó a contar algunas historias acerca de mí también.
Fue muy bueno cuando finalmente llegamos a Camp Pendleton porque nos tenían sillas en primera fila, en ‘ringside’ para ver las peleas. Mi amigo Shawn Hawk, quien también es talento de Sycuan, se apuntó un rápido nocaut, cosa que fue buena ver.
Fue un honor estar en esa base militar donde conviven hombres y mujeres que protegen a este país. Tuve la oportunidad de estrechar las manos y conocer a algunos de los Marines y algunos de ellos me dijeron que no podían imaginarse una profesión en la que te van a golpear. Lo curioso es que, pensé lo mismo acerca de estos valientes soldados.
Después de las peleas, regresamos todos a Los Angeles. Afortunadamente la ‘limo’ era enorme y todos pudimos estirarnos, ponernos cómodos y dormir. No regresamos hastatarde, pero eso no importó. Aún así tuve que levantarme temprano para entrenar al día siguiente.

Let me start off by saying that training is going well. I feel focused and ready for Nov. 4.
On Friday, I got to the gym early in the morning like I always do. I’m really good in the morning and I love being at the gym when there’s nobody there.
After my morning session, I took a small break, then got back to the gym around 11:30. This time, I brought my two sons, Carlos Jr. (15) and Nacho (3). There was a time while I was sparring that Nacho got a little too close to the action and almost got trampled. Later on, while I was lying on my back stretching, Nacho came over and whacked me in the head. I think it’s safe to say that Nacho won’t be coming to many more workout sessions.
But the reason he was there was because we had a special treat for him later: we went to Camp Pendleton to watch some fights put on by my promotional company, Sycuan Ringside Promotions, at the military base. I was excited about doing this ever since I heard Sycuan put on a card free of charge at Camp Pendleton last year, and when I heard they were doing it again, I was excited about being able to attend this one.
Sycuan sent us an enormous limo, an Excursion. Myself; Carlos Jr.; Nacho; my daughter, Lourdes; my wife, Graciella; and our friend Louis made the trip down. There was a writer from Sports Illustrated and his translator who came with us. The limo was so huge that Carlos Jr. and Nacho were able to play catch with a beach ball most of the time while the writer talked to me and Graciella.
We talked about my life and my boxing career the whole trip to Camp Pendleton. Graciella helped tell some stories about me, too.
It was pretty cool when we finally got to Camp Pendleton because Sycuan had us all sit on the apron at ringside to watch the fights. My buddy, Shawn Hawk, who is also with Sycuan, scored a quick knockout, so that was fun to see.
It was an honor to be at that military base with the men and women who protect this country. I got a chance to shake hands and meet some of the marines and a few of them said to me that they couldn’t imagine a profession where you know you’re going to get hit. Funny thing is, I thought the same thing about these brave men and women.
After the fights, we all drove back up to Los Angeles. Thankfully the limo was so huge, we all were able to stretch out and go to sleep. We didn’t get back until late, but that didn’t matter – I still had to get up early to train the next day.
